Rion Sumiyoshi, 22, representing Oriental Bio and Meiji University, is determined to showcase her growth through her results at the first event of the Figure Skating Grand Prix (GP) Series held in France. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.

Ahead of the short program (SP) on October 17, she carried out her final practice and adjustments at the competition venue. Although she didn’t successfully land her jumps, she repeatedly attempted the quad toe loop. Reflecting on Angers, a familiar competition location, she said, “The scenery and atmosphere here are exactly as I envisioned. It feels like, ‘Yes, this is the place.’ Honestly, it’s like coming back home. That sense of comfort allowed me to practice with peace of mind.”

Regarding her attempt at challenging technical elements, she added, “The way I’m moving my body and maintaining the axis of rotation is improving. I still have time until the free skate, so I hope to make the necessary adjustments.”

She entered this season with early preparation, gaining competition experience at regional events starting in the summer. Her readiness is apparent. Looking ahead, she expressed her ambitions for a higher medal. Playing on words, she said, “Not just bronze anymore – bronze, bronze, bronze…” Then, considering the possibility of a silver medal, she updated her goal further, saying, “I want to aim for gold.”
