19-year-old figure skater Daria Usacheva, a silver medalist at the Junior World Championships and Skate America Grand Prix, recently revealed that she has started working as a coach in Beijing. After retiring in 2021 due to a hip injury, Usacheva shared her excitement about this new chapter and the unique experience she’s gaining abroad. Here’s a translation of her comments.

In a social media post, Usacheva confirmed her move to Beijing to work as a coach:

“I’ve already spent over a month here in Beijing. I’m working as a coach and will be staying here for the next year.”

The young coach opened up about the factors that motivated her decision to accept the position:

“I was invited to work in Beijing, and I spent a long time thinking about the pros and cons before deciding to accept. I realized this would be an incredible opportunity to gain international work experience, communicate with children in English, and immerse myself in a completely different culture and mindset.”

Usacheva emphasized the transformative nature of the experience:

“Living in a foreign country where the language is entirely different and where English isn’t widely spoken is extremely valuable, both in terms of work and personal growth. Life here is entirely different – not good or bad, just different – and incredibly fascinating.”

She admitted that her decision wasn’t easy:

“It was tough to leave my loved ones behind for a while. I’m a very emotional, extroverted person, and I deeply miss the people I left in Moscow – my friends, my beloved dog Cindy, my work, and the children I coached. But it’s only for a year, and I feel like 19 is the perfect age to experiment, try new things, learn, and gain experiences that will undoubtedly be useful in life. I ultimately decided that I had to go.”

Reflecting on her time in China, Usacheva shared her impressions:

“I really like it here in China. I’ve been here for about a month and a half now, and it’s incredibly beautiful and clean – the roads are pristine, and there’s no dirt at all on the streets. The summer heat here is intense, though; I’ve experienced temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius, which I’m not a fan of. But overall, life here is lively and interesting. Even though I spend most of my time at the rink working, I make sure to take any opportunity to explore and enjoy the city.”

Usacheva explained that she coaches at Passion Skating Club, where she leads a busy and productive schedule:

“I’m currently working at Passion Skating Club, which has many children enrolled. We’ve already accomplished great progress together – learning new elements, refining techniques, and fixing mistakes. It’s a very active, hardworking environment with lots of work to do. The children are incredibly diligent and capable.”

She also hinted at significant plans for the upcoming season:

“We’re working on programs scheduled for August competitions. Preparing the skaters for competitions is a constant process here – it’s year-round. The children always need to stay in top shape and be ready.”
