Vladimir Putin recently called for reform in sports medicine, citing the doping cases of Maria Sharapova and Kamila Valieva as examples.

“Our FMBA (Federal Medical-Biological Agency) is the main medical organization overseeing the medical support of sports, especially elite-level sports. At the same time, certain federations bring in specialists with questionable qualifications, to put it mildly, and even practitioners of so-called alternative medicine.

As a result, the country’s leadership and millions of sports fans and enthusiasts face situations that are difficult to explain at first glance. This was the case, I believe, with Maria Sharapova, who at the time said, ‘The doctor gave me some medication, and I didn’t know it was prohibited.’

The same thing happened, I think, in figure skating, when Valieva was accused of using certain substances. She didn’t know anything about it either. It’s just nonsense,” Putin said during a meeting of the Sports Council.

Irina Rodnina’s Comments on Valieva’s Case

“The president didn’t shy away from the issue — he told the truth about Valieva’s case. At the time of the anti-doping rule violation, she was a minor. In Russia, we passed a law back in 2016 imposing financial and criminal liability for administering or coercing the use of prohibited substances.

Since Valieva was a minor, the people responsible for preparing her should have been held accountable. Specifically, this includes her doctor, coach, and parents. However, no investigation into this matter took place.

In fact, in all the years this law on criminal liability for doping coercion has existed, I believe there has been only one investigation,” said three-time Olympic champion in figure skating Irina Rodnina.

Ok, well, unexpected for sure. I mean responsible or not, still the idea is to have fair sports. The fact that Kamila Valieva suffered from the psychological point of view is another problem completely. But who can you take the medal from ? It’s not the parents and the doctors who won the medal. And in the end, what does it really change to the results, the fact that she knew or not ?
