The two French ice dance pairs secured two Olympic spots for France. The appearance of the new duo Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier-Beaudry upends the rankings and might prevent one of the pairs from earning their ticket to the Games. Loicia Demougeot and Theo Le Mercer commented on this news. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on Franceinfo.

The announcement of Guillaume Cizeron’s return to competition with a new partner hasn’t been entirely well-received by Team France. Loicia Demougeot and Theo Le Mercer who may find themselves affected by the revised rankings, acknowledged the situation, saying:

“Guillaume remains the greatest skater of all time, so as a skating fan, I’m eager to see what he achieves with his new partner. However, as a French skater, it’s tough to accept,” admitted Theo Le Mercier at the conclusion of their free dance at the World Figure Skating Championships in Boston, where they placed 15th.

“I don’t want to sound too bitter, but of course we’re a bit upset,” Le Mercier added. “But we’re going to fight. We’ll give it our all. Still, it feels like we’re facing a mountain. It’s pretty complicated.” He continued, “In the end, even if it’s not their intention, their presence is inevitably going to hurt us. That’s the part that’s hardest to deal with.”

The skaters also expressed their displeasure with the French Federation’s reaction, which issued a public statement celebrating Cizeron’s return. “What bothered us a bit was the way it was announced. It felt like they were selling it as Guillaume coming back to save French figure skating,” Demougeot told.
