“You were really laughing, weren’t you?” “There’s a change in the music, and since there was quite a bit of time left, I thought we might as well rest. Well I’m 32 now!” Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara about mistake on a pair spin and silver at the NHK Trophy

In the interview posted on Sports Graphic Number Web, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara about winning silver at the NHK Trophy. Here’s a translation of their comments.

“I think the biggest mistake was the missed pair spin,” said Ryuichi about thier free skate. “I’m not sure if it was a groove or a mark from landing. We think pair spins don’t usually have many mistakes, so it was a good learning experience.”

“It was the first time we ever missed a pair spin; it was quite unusual for us. We talked about being more careful and practicing it more in the future,” Miura added.

“Even though mistakes occurred, we were able to steady ourselves without falling apart and return to our usual techniques, regaining concentration. I really think we’ve grown in that respect,” said Kihara.

Riku Miura also discussed what kept them from collapsing. “After the spin ended, there was a moment that served as a break point, and Ryuichi was laughing so much there that I felt reassured, ‘It’s going to be okay,'” she said. Then, turning to Ryuichi, she remarked, “You were really laughing, weren’t you?”

To which Kihara replied, “My foot touched down, so it was ‘no count.’ There was nothing else to do but switch and take a break. There’s a change in the music, and since there was quite a bit of time left, I thought we might as well rest. I’m 32 now,” Kihara laughed.

Ryuichi also told a bit about his health, “Right before Skate America, my back pain slightly recurred, it was more of a discomfort than pain. Considering what happened last year, I was very cautious. At Skate America, I had it checked by a doctor who diagnosed it as probably muscle fatigue rather than a bone issue. After returning to Japan, tests confirmed there was no bone problem which was a relief. Of course, I think it’s important to consult how I feel and not strain myself, but knowing it’s not the bones, I think I can push myself properly again.”

With the winners, 19-year-old Metelkina and 21-year-old Berulava in mind, Kihara commented: “Since we weren’t in an absolutely dominant position, we’ve always been in a chasing role. It’s truly wonderful to have new, fantastic rivals emerge, keeping our motivation high in practice and enabling us to challenge confidently in competitions.”
