Kaori Sakamoto (24) returned to Japan on the October 29th after winning the second event of the Grand Prix series, Skate Canada. Her new free program this season is based on the Broadway musical “Chicago,” and she mentioned, “There are many parts where I dance rather than jump. It’s denser than before, so I’m still not quite used to it,” reflecting on her performance.

“What I’ve been told by Ms. Marie (Marie-France Dubreuil), the choreographer, isn’t to smile nicely but, how should I put it?” she demonstrated on the spot. Showing a sly smile, she concluded, “Mischievous?”

She explained, “It’s not exactly about luring the judges, but she tells me to be more like ‘captivate them and make a killing,'” She the story revolves around a villainous woman, it seems that she is being asked to express herself in a way that is far from cheerful. At the same time, Sakamoto herself says, “Maybe the Kansai vibe surprisingly helps… Like, ‘No, no, no’,” indicating she’s found something relatable. “I want to continue to blend what I’ve cultivated into the world of ‘Chicago’!” she said with a smile.

Her next competition will be the NHK Trophy, which opens on November 8 in Tokyo. “There’s still a lot more I can do. I want to make proper adjustments and aim to finish with better scores and better content than in Canada,” she told.
