Sota Yamamoto (24) scored 92.16 points in the short program, starting off in third place. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Nikkansports.
Last year at Skate Canada, Sota Yamamoto achieved his first GP victory. Heading into the competition on favorable ground, he told, “I’ve trained so I will trust in myself and go all out till the end. I want to give my all until the very last.”
Sota also told that he has been preparing for the shorter bords at the rink. “I have been simulating in a smaller size. I have been committed to such training, so I want to believe in myself and go all out.”
Reflecting on his performance and scores in the short program, Sota told, “I think the score was within what I had imagined. However, I wasn’t really focusing on the score until it came out; I just hoped to deliver what I had practiced. My practices weren’t going very well, but I had been building up my training. Even before jumping, in the end, I was able to trust myself, so I think that was the result of all the practice I’ve put in.”
He also commented on his triple axel that was a bit tight as “Yamamoto’s style.” Despite feeling anxious about some bad axels that started appearing in Japan, he said, “I decided to go for it aggressively, and although it was a bit cramped, I was able to trust myself.”
