Riku Miura (22) and Ryuichi Kihara (32) are leading after the short program in their first GP of the season Skate America. They scored 77.79 points, approaching their personal best of 80.72 points. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on Nikkansports.

“With the scores at 77 this year, I think we’re close to our targeted scores. We haven’t surpassed 75 points much in recent years, so being able to perform what we practiced well in today’s first event was great,” said Kihara.

At their first competition of the season, the Lombardy Trophy in September, they had a fall during a lift which caused Kihara to hit the ice with his back. After the official practice at Skate America, he alleviated concerns by stating, “It’s just a bruise, so I think I’m fine now. It’s probably my buttocks and lower back. I haven’t had X-rays yet, so I can’t say for sure, but likely there are no problems. I’m fine.”

Last season, they missed the GP series due to Kihara’s injury. “Last season, I continuously couldn’t compete due to injuries, and I really came to appreciate the opportunity to compete. Being able to return to the GP series together again this time, I feel incredibly grateful,” said Ryuichi Kihara. Miura also added, “There are many competitions this season, so I want to concentrate and tackle each one carefully.”

Looking toward the free program scheduled for October 19, Kihara told, “Since we’ve diligently practiced, tomorrow will be the same as today, just displaying what we’ve done, skating with confidence.”
