Ice dancer Vasilisa Kaganovskaya spoke about the break up of the duo with Valeri Angelopol. The skaters performed together for five seasons, but their pair broke up in late August 2023. Here’s a translation of her comment.
“Q: Without too much detail, of course, everyone is aware of the conflict that has been fueled for a long time. Is it true that the last straw in your partnership was indeed the contract? Or were there other factors leading up to this?
Vasilisa Kaganovskaya: It wasn’t like one day there was a contract issue, and that was it. It started in July. Back then, there was also a lot of talk about the pair breaking up.
And indeed, the pair was on the verge of breaking up, but thanks to our combined efforts – mine and Anjelika Alekseevna Krylova’s – we somehow managed to to put everything back together.
Because we didn’t want to miss an entire season. There were only a couple of months left until the test skates, and it was unclear what would happen next. Therefore, we wanted to “hold on” till the Russian Nationals. But for a couple of months, from July to the end of August, we managed to do it, and in the end – well, it is what it is.
Q: So, you knew that the pair would most likely break up after the Russian Nationals, which you wanted to hold on to, and with such thoughts, you were training.
Vasilisa Kaganovskaya: Yes.
Q: That’s tough. And how does one skate with such an understanding?
Vasilisa Kaganovskaya: Well, listen… We’ve been through even harder times.”
