Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara finished the Short Program in second place with a season’s best of 73.53 points.

“We were able to do what we can do now, so I think it was a good first step,” said Kihara after the skate.

“We’ve really built up our confidence through practice compared to the Four Continents Championships. I was determined to skate with a smile,” added Miura.

They returned to their Free Skate routine “Woman” from the 2021-2022 season. Miura welcomed this decision saying, “The period of practice was long, and the piece was uplifting. It’s very ‘us’.”

When asked about the pressure of winning for the second year in a row, Miura said, “There isn’t any. We see ourselves as the ones chasing, so we are just focused on doing what we can do.” In the free skate they will skate last, right after the Canadian pair. Kihara confidently asserted, “There’s nothing left for us to defend so we just have to attack,” solidifying their vision for a powerful comeback. Kihara also added, “My back is okay. I’ve built up solid practice, so my confidence is back. I’m more prepared than I was for the Four Continents Championships.”
