Here’s a translation of Kamila Valieva’s comments about quadruple jumps and Ilia Malinin.
“Q: You have already shown that you can win even without ultra-c elements. What motivates you to restore them?
Kamila Valieva: It’s an internal feeling, as strange as it may sound. You can’t imagine the euphoria you experience during a quadruple jump. I really want to regain that beautiful feeling of executing a quadruple.
Q: For you, is figure skating more about technical difficulty or components?
Kamila Valieva: That’s an age-old debate. The challenge of figure skating lies in needing both technique and components. If you have a large number of jumps but mediocre skating skills, watching such a performance isn’t very interesting. At the same time, if you skate very well but lack jumps, it’s not enough for podium finishes or victory.
Q: Doesn’t it seem like with the suspension of Russian athletes, the race for quadruples has diminished?
Kamila Valieva: Perhaps you mean the girls? Because with the boys and their quadruples, everything is more than fine.
The race hasn’t diminished; it’s just a generational shift. Most of the girls I competed with are not competing at the moment, and among junior girls, everything is fine with quadruples, but they can’t compete with the seniors yet. It will take a little time; they’ll grow up and make some noise!
Q: By the way, Ilia Malinin landed a quadruple axel. What do you think about it?
Kamila Valieva: I’m in awe of Ilia. Jumping like that and making it look so easy… Incredible! I want to applaud standing up and thank him for his dedication. Everything came together here: technique, his natural abilities, and the athlete’s internal feelings. I think Ilia is just special; he is very talented.
Q: Do you think we will see a quadruple axel from our guys?
Kamila Valieva: Of course, I have no doubt.”
