Here’s a translation of Alexander Kogan’s, the general director of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia about the state of women’s single skating.

Q: Do you not think it is necessary to simplify the programs for women? Russian women are already leaders in this regard.

Alexander Kogan: Currently, we have high competition. In the Grand Prix stages in Russia, there were over 70 women. The second part of our ballet is that the ISU has raised the age minimum for senior athletes to 17. Traditionally, our country and federation, to stay ahead, decided that we allow competitors from the age of 16. This is what we adhere to.

Why should we cut off juniors? We will have such a number of unique athletes there that they simply won’t be able to coexist. There are only a few foreign figure skaters who are pleasant to watch and who will not perform content from 30 years ago. Jumping two double jumps? Slutskaya did it. Do we want to return exclusively to triple jumps? We can go back to tiple-double.

We need to understand that figure skating is a sport. And there must be criteria here that allow us to see the overcoming of possibilities. We look at men who rotate quads and do not think about returning to content that was 20 years ago.”
