Here’s a translation of Eteri Tutberidze’s comment regarding difficulties of Alina Zagitova’s preparation for the Olympics made in a interview with Leonid Slutsky.

Q: Many figure skaters have to work under such conditions to become Olympic champions, that later, when you already have that medal, you just think: why should I work for 12 hours again?

Eteri Tutberidze: Let’s be honest: they don’t go to school; they don’t see anything in their lives while they’re striving for those medals. They don’t see anything except for the gym, the choreography room, the ice, and again… some physiotherapy because everything hurts. Everything just hurts for them.

In Alina’s (Zagitova) case, her legs were worn to the point of bleeding during the Olympic season, to the extent that it made me nauseous when she took her leg out of the boot. But I didn’t tell her about it. Because if you let her know it’s bad, she might not find the strength to endure it any longer.

I don’t understand how she endured it. But it was all for the sake of that goal, for the Olympics, for performing well. I think it’s somewhat wrong to chase after a medal at all. You should strive for your best performance,” Tutberidze said in an interview on the YouTube channel ‘Comment.Show’
