Miyahara had announced her retirement in the spring of 2022. However, when he was selected to compete in Japan Open, she prepared her competition routine. She performed “Romeo and Juliet,” executing a triple lutz followed by a triple jump combination at the beginning and another triple lutz later in her program. Her trademark, graceful skating from her competitive days was still very much intact, and she received a standing ovation from the audience after her performance.

During the post-event press conference, she said, “Since it was a competition after a long break, I had to prepare in a really short time, so I had some anxiety. But I thought I would just do what I could, one thing at a time, and I approached the competition that way. I think I was able to achieve that.” Reflecting on her performance to “Romeo and Juliet,” she described how she felt the grandeur of the music and said, “I was choreographing it, but I was skating with a feeling of grandeur that I couldn’t hide. I was really able to get into the music.”

This competition was a team event with three regions: Japan, North America, and Europe, with each team consisting of two male and two female skaters competing in the free skate. Team Japan, composed of Tatsuki Machida, Kaori Sakamoto, Kazuki Tomono, and Koshiro Shimada, achieved their second consecutive victory with a total score of 614.79 points.
