Alena Kostornaia has become a choreographer at the Evgeni Plushenko Academy.
“We are happy to see Alena back on our ice, this time as a choreographer. Alena Kostornaia has joined our team working with juniors! In her free time from training and competitions, Alena will help our athletes and participate in our shows,” posted the Plushenko Academy.
Kostornaia is the European champion in women’s single skating and is currently competing in pairs with Georgi Kunitsa.
Kostornaia trained in Plushenko’s group during the 2020/21 season.
Alexander Zhulin has called Alena Kostornaia’s decision to become a choreographer a PR.
“Combining the work of a choreographer and training? In my opinion, this is practically impossible if we are talking about serious sports. It seems more like a PR move,” said Alexander Zhulin.
Alexei Zheleznyakov called Alena Kostornaia’s decision to become a choreographer “nonsense.”
“I am, of course, surprised because, if I’m not mistaken, Alena decided to develop herself in pair skating.
Well, first of all, to call yourself a choreographer, you need to have an education! Secondly, it’s a vast field of work; people study for years, study specific subjects: the art of a ballet, the history of costume, the history of music, the theory and practice of classical and contemporary dance – there are many subjects, and there are specific educational institutions for this.
You need to learn and understand a lot to call yourself a choreographer. Otherwise, it’s just nonsense. I can’t call myself a civil engineer just because I like to build, can I?
Everything has its time and place, and everything requires learning. Otherwise, you can call yourself whatever you want, but that doesn’t mean you are one. There is a word called professionalism; it doesn’t come out of nowhere,” said Alexei Zheleznyakov, a choreographer from Eteri Tutberidze’s group.

And maybe she’ll end up going to school and study all the theoretical things; no one is claiming she’s currently choreographing senior competition programs, perhaps she’s just trying out how the job suits her. Even without having studied choreography, she’s still been in the sport for the majority of her life, she knows the elements and what’s necessary to connect them. If she puts together a few show programs, why not? Let the girl live and try out things!
