Europena champion Loena Hendrickx will not be able to defend her title this season. The Belgian figure skater had to withdraw from competitions due to an injury. Here’s a translation of her comments posted on Sporza.
According to Loena, her ankle turns out to be too unstable after an injury she sustained during training. “The bad luck just keeps following me,” she shares herself.
She started off in early October with a third-place finish at the Shanghai Trophy, but afterwards, she had to skip the Grand Prix de, the Finlandia Trophy, and the Golden Spin of Zagreb.
In December, she injured her ankle during training. This also threw a wrench in her preparations for the European Championships, a competition she now will also not be able to start as the defending champion.
“Further examination revealed her ankle to be too unstable to fully load and thus compete. She will have to miss the European Championships, which start on January 29,” her team announces.
“The discomfort continued and caused Loena constant pressure pain. An MRI last Friday showed fluid, a cyst, and ongoing ankle instability.”
“That instability prevents Loena from completing a number of important jumps, even in training. Participation in the European Championships, which start in a week, is unfortunately out of the question.”
“This is really so unfortunate,” Hendrickx herself responds. “Bad luck has been chasing me all season. Just when the problems from the beginning of the season seemed to be overcome and everything finally started going according to plan, I sprained my ankle.”
“It seemed like a minor thing, but it continued to bother me and now seems linked to a general instability in my ankle. I have no maximum spring strength from the right leg, so I can’t train a competition-worthy routine, let alone perform one.”
