Marina Zueva: Chan and Chen
I was more than just surprised when Patrick announced his new coaching team. I was even more surprised when I saw Nathan Chen with Zueva at Finlandia Trophy. Should we expect new surprises from Marina?)
Patrick Chan and Marina Zueva gave a comment to Russian journalist A.Simonenko about their joint work.
Patrick: It was just circumstances. I worked in Canton with my coach Kathy Johnson on Marina’s ice. And when we parted with my coach Marina supported me a lot, even when she hasn’t been my coach yet. And I felt that this support can help me. Not only her, but Oleg Epstein’s and Johnny Jones’, who also help me a lot. I really like the team atmosphere, I feel happy at trainings, also I feel comfortable at competitions.
How do you feel at one with the ice dancers?
– Unusually. Many people ask me about it. In fact, in about a week I got used. All of them are my friends. When you start to learn how who trains, then everything goes very well and smoothly.
Can you take something from them?
– Of course! First of all, the quality of skating. Although, this is my forte, it can always be improved. I need help not only in technique. So we’re working on everything.
You’ve been working with Zueva not for a long time, but it turns out you’re already happy that you moved?
– Yes. I have the feeling, which I haven’t had for a long time – a desire to progress and compete. I don’t know why, but this feeling appeared. And I enjoy it, I’m glad what I do on practices.

And Marina’s comment:
Patrick is a formed athlete, so it’s difficult to say what he still can be tought. Rather, it’s necessary to create a comfortable atmosphere for him. With comfortable state at practices comes the technical consistancy. We work on Axel – both we, coaches, and Patrick himself.
She also commented on coaching Nathan Chen. According to Zueva he came to improve his artistic mark.
Before leaving to Finland Nathan did a clean free program with four different quads. Toe loop, Salchow, Lutz, Flip. It is unique. It’s a great merit of Rafael Arutyunyan, who did a great technical work. Now it is necessary to raise the second mark.

I’m so happy for Nathan – he is so talented, and so young! Can’t wait to see him kill it at the Grand Prix!
I’m glad Marina is working with Patrick; he needs a strong coach to help get him back on track. She is one of my favorite coaches because she is tough, but encouraging and nice.
I hope she will convince Patrick to pick powerful classic music for Olympic season, at least for fp.
That would be a great idea! He skates so well to music that’s fast and powerful because he skates SO fast!
