Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier-Beaudry have addressed extra-sporting controversies surrounding their partnership and subsequent victory in ice dance during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in Italy. Here’s a translation.
Best friends off the ice, the French skaters both faced challenges with their former partners. Guillaume Cizeron was accused of emotional abuse and toxic behavior by Gabriella Papadakis, while Laurence Fournier-Beaudry faced scrutiny for her support of her partner Nikolaj Sorensen, who had been suspended for “sexual misconduct.”
“All I can say is that we support Nik because we believe in his innocence,” the French skater explained in an interview published on Friday in L’Équipe. “But of course, we condemn any form of sexual assault. I can’t fathom why anyone would think otherwise. It makes no sense.”
He continued, “These are not the values we stand for. To imagine that, based on such conjecture, is not even hurtful – it’s absurd.”
Targeted in a book written by his former skating partner Gabriella Papadakis, Guillaume Cizeron has also dismissed all allegations made in her memoir Pour ne pas disparaître (So as Not to Disappear).
When prompted about claims that he threatened not to skate with Papadakis if she reported her alleged abuser—whose identity has never been disclosed—the now two-time Olympic champion firmly refuted the accusations.
“It’s an outright lie,” stated Guillaume Cizeron, who now finds himself entangled in a media and legal battle following his formal cease-and-desist letter to Gabriella Papadakis.
