Adam Siao Him Fa delivered a brilliant performance and set a personal best to place third in the short program at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, positioning himself as a strong medal contender. Alban Preaubert, former French figure skater and a consultant for Eurosport commented on the performance. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“I’m not surprised to see him at this level; he’s already done exceptional things in the past,” said Alban Preaubert, a consultant for Eurosport. “But we couldn’t help but be a bit worried because there have been highs and lows at the start of this season. With the Olympic pressure, we didn’t really know what to expect.”

“I was really focused on my program, going from jump to jump and staying concentrated until the end,” Siao Him Fa explained. “Once I’d completed the three jumps, I could let go and give my all on the spins and choreography.” “In his step sequences, his whole body moves – he’s really one of the best at that on the circuit,” noted Alban Preaubert. “It’s explosive.”

Siao Him Fa gave his all, making the most of his talent to set a career record in the short program (102.55 points). He made the right choices, not just on the ice but also in his season planning. “He prepared optimally by skipping the European Championships and training well in Milan,” said Alban Preaubert. “It was the right decision; he had nothing left to prove at the European level.”

“He’s a real fighter; he’s always there on the big day and rises from the ashes when things aren’t going well,” summarized Alban Preaubert. “He never falls very far, but we’ve seen him struggle in short programs and then make incredible comebacks in the free skate. He had a tough start to the season, but then he bounced back even stronger. That shows just how strong he is mentally.”

Siao Him Fa put everything together in the short program, and seeing his competitors sometimes struggle – except for Malinin and Kagiyama – makes the prospect of a medal even more likely. “We know he’s the only skater in the world capable of beating Kagiyama and Malinin,” said Alban Preaubert. “Now, he has a bit of a cushion over the skaters behind him; it’s the ideal scenario. Silver isn’t out of reach. But if we’d been promised bronze before the competition, we’d have taken it. But appetite comes with eating.”
