Leaders in the rhythm dance, French ice dancers Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron om their performance. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on L’Equipe.
“Q: What do you think of your score (90.18 points), your best of the season in this rhythm dance?
Guillaume Cizeron: Our goal was to improve our score compared to a few days ago (in the team event). We wanted to dance as much as possible, to let go tonight, and to try to enjoy the moment. We received a lot of support from the audience, which really warmed our hearts. It was truly a beautiful moment.
Q: You improved your technical score compared to your team event score (89.98 points on Friday). What did you do better?
Laurence Fournier Beaudry: I’d say that tonight, our goal was really to let go a bit. We broke the ice during the team event. We managed to release some of the nerves that were present at the start of the Olympics. Tonight was about having a bit more fun and coming away with a feeling of freedom.
Q: Guillaume, you seemed a bit tense at the very start of the program…
Guillaume Cizeron: No, at the start, I wasn’t particularly tense. I think we delivered the best performance we could tonight. It wasn’t 100% perfect. As we skate, we know very well what’s perfect and what isn’t. It’s a bit of a trap to fall into that and forget to enjoy the moment. But I think we still managed to finish with a mix of focus and enjoyment. In those moments, I was really able to rely on Laurence and trust in our training. I try not to leave any points on the ice.
Q: What will you do while waiting for your main competitors to skate?
Laurence Fournier Beaudry: Now, we’ve done our performance, what we could control. Now, it’s a bit of an impatient wait to see where we’ll finish in the competition. Because yes, we’re very ambitious. We came here to win gold.
Q: Is it an advantage or disadvantage for you to have skated so early?
Guillaume Cizeron: I think we try not to see it as either an advantage or a disadvantage. We always try to see the glass as half full. I think maybe it allows us to feel a little less pressure.
Q: Did you hear the French hockey teams cheering before your performance?
Guillaume Cizeron: Yes, it really warmed our hearts. I think that’s also part of the Olympic experience – having that team spirit. And beyond the performances, I think it’s really the human side, the relationships we build during these Games, that create memorable memories for us.”
