World champion Alysa Liu announced she will not attempt a triple axel at the U.S. Nationals, explaining she hasn’t trained it enough, and expressed joy over her short program performance. Here’s a translation.
After the first day of the competition in St. Louis, Liu is in second place with a score of 81.11 points, behind Amber Glenn (83.05).
“I’m just on cloud nine right now. I’m very happy with this skate – this is probably my favorite short program of my entire career, and performing it for the audience today was a real gift. I’m truly very happy. I’m especially pleased with how the lutz–loop combination and the Biellmann spin turned out.
I don’t plan to attempt a triple axel at this competition because I simply haven’t enough time to work on it. It might sound funny, but I didn’t realize how little time I had left before Nationals. I wanted to work on it, but there just wasn’t enough time to practice it every day. So no, my free skate at this event will be without a triple axel. And that’s okay.
As for the free skate, it’s a completely new program. I can’t wait to show it in full – so far, I’ve only run through a layout without jumps during practice here in St. Louis. By the way, the dress is very beautiful; I hope you’ll like it too.
I’m proud of how all the girls skated today. I learn a lot from them. At my rink, I don’t train with other strong skaters, so I especially value the chance to compete at events like this – it’s a great opportunity to see all the amazing things the other girls are doing.
I always watch their performances because I think we’re all – I know I say this a lot, and it might sound like a broken record – but we’re like independent artists, and our skates don’t interfere with each other. We’re here to delight the audience, so I don’t want to miss the chance to watch the other skaters perform,” the quote is reported by Sports correspondent Maya Bagryantseva.
