Yuzuru Hanyu, two-time Olympic men’s figure skating champion and now in his fourth year as a professional, will headline the ice show “Yuzuru Hanyu notte stellata 2026” next March. The event was announced by organizers on the 11th and will be held at Sekisui Heim Super Arena in Miyagi, marking its fourth edition. Here’s a translation of his comments posted on Nikkansports.
March next year will mark 15 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. As the show’s leader, Hanyu will send a message of “hope” from the disaster-affected region of Miyagi through the ice show, joined by fellow world-class professional skaters.
“Notte stellata” is the program Hanyu performed at the exhibition gala of the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. The title means “starry night” in Italian. Hanyu, who experienced the earthquake in his hometown of Sendai, named the show after the beautiful star-filled sky he saw during the blackout, which gave him hope.
“Even if it’s just while we’re performing, or while people are watching notte stellata, I want them to feel hope. That’s the message embedded in notte stellata. Together with my fellow skaters, transcending nationalities, I hope we can form a circle and create a single hope,” Hanyu told.
“I feel it’s important to convey to children born after the earthquake, and to those who were too young to remember it, not only how difficult the disaster was, but also the lessons we learned because of it,” he added.
