Anna Shcherbakova: “I’ve always understood that my performance depends entirely on me. If something doesn’t work out, it’s my fault. If something goes well, then I deserve the credit for it.”

Anna Shcherbakova shares her earliest memories of stepping onto the ice, her thoughts on superstitions in sports, and her love for both healthy and indulgent foods during a fan event and recent interviews. Here’s a translation.
First Steps on the Ice
Olympic champion Anna Shcherbakova recalled her very first experience on the ice, an unexpected moment that wasn’t even intended as a training session:
“My older sister used to practice figure skating. The first time I went on the ice, as far as I can remember, there were no plans for me to start training. I think my mom just told me, ‘Go onto the ice and get your sister – tell her to come off.’
So, I went onto the ice, and for some reason, I thought it was all going to be very easy and simple. As I stepped onto the rink, someone immediately held my hand. I thought, ‘Why? I’ll easily walk over, say what I need to, and leave.’
I started walking confidently but fell the first time. I thought, ‘No big deal, that was just an accident.’ I tried again with the same enthusiasm, only to fall a second time. The third time I fell, I think I might have said, ‘This might not be for me.’ I can’t say for sure if I actually said it though!” Shcherbakova shared with a smile.
The skater also noted that figure skating has become a central part of her family’s life.
“At most competiitons, I continue to work as a commentator or host. My parents and sisters watch and later discuss the events together. Sometimes, my parents even come to watch from the stands.
There was a funny moment once when I was commentating at a Grand Prix event, and my parents were sitting in the audience. My dad was watching the ice while simultaneously listening to my commentary through headphones!”
On Superstitions and Talismans
When asked about superstitions and lucky charms often associated with athletes, Shcherbakova stated she doesn’t believe in them:
“No, I’ve always understood that my performance depends entirely on me. If something doesn’t work out, it’s my fault. If something goes well, then I deserve the credit for it.”
As a family deeply immersed in figure skating, Shcherbakova also shared that she and her family enjoy watching competitions at home or on TV:
“Of course! Our whole family is involved in this sport. These days, I’m often in the role of a commentator,” she said.
Love for Food and Indulgences
During a fan meeting for National Physical Fitness Day, Shcherbakova gave insight into her eating habits and attitude toward treats:
“I can allow myself indulgences, but I also try to find healthier products that I genuinely enjoy. Recently, I discovered some healthy foods that I truly love – things like seafood or salads. Maybe it’s because I’ve found my favorites, so I don’t feel like I’m forcing myself to eat a salad just because it’s healthy.”
However, Shcherbakova admitted she doesn’t always stick to healthy eating, especially when treating herself.
“Of course, if it’s a vacation or if I’m in a bad mood, I might indulge in something unhealthy, too.
My ultimate comfort food, when I’m feeling down, is vanilla ice cream. No toppings, no extras – just give me a bucket of plain vanilla ice cream, and I’ll be happy,” she said cheerfully.
