Nobunari Oda, 37-year-old representative of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, scored 76.62 points, starting in fifth place at the Kinki Championship. After the SP performance, he announced his retirement from competitive skating at the end of this season.

“This season marks an endpoint for me, and I hope to grow further as a skater. The National Championships are my main goal, and since it will be held in my hometown Osaka, I hope to show a performance that represents my best, even though it may not be my absolute final appearance,” he explained about his decision, citing, “This season is probably the limit for my knee, realistically speaking.”

On this day, he performed “Matsukensamba II” for the first time in front of an audience, a program he choreographed himself. “When I was searching for a short program track for my last active season, I wanted something that really represented me and something that would be enjoyable. I saw an advertisement for a show by Ken Matsudaira to be held at Shin Shochikuza (Osaka) and thought, ‘This is it!’ Matsukensamba, in my opinion, is soul music for the Japanese people; it’s definitely exciting and enjoyable. The song itself is fun, and I wanted to convey the joy of figure skating with it,” he shared.
