Deanna Stellato-Dudek talks about winning gold at the 2024 World Championships and shares her feeling about being an inspiration for other people in the interview for Hello magazine Canada.
“Q: Deanna, congratulations on your gold-medal victory! How did you feel after the performance?
Deanna Stellato-Dudek: The moment we finished, I asked Max, “How did it go?” because after each element, I just forgot about it and moved on to what I needed to think about for the next one. I knew I didn’t have any huge mistakes because you typically remember those. When he told me it was good, I felt so relieved. And then when you’re sitting in the “kiss and cry” [waiting for your scores], it’s such a vulnerable place to be because, whether you’re happy with how you skated or not, you never know hos it’s going to be received by the judges. So when our score came up, I was really happy that it was our highest of the season.
Q: People have said you’ve inspired them to make a big change in their own lives. Can you share some of their stories?
Deanna Stellato-Dudek: I’ve probably received the most messages from adult skaters who have wanted to come back to the sport but didn’t think they could. They miss the wind across their faces when they’re skating, and seeing me doing what I’m doing at this level has encouraged them to come back. I’ve had a lot of people message me saying they’re going to go back to school to get an MBA or a law degree, and some who have decided to change careers. When I get these messages, I get so teary because I can’t believe a Worlds performance had that effect on them.”
