On choosing a recipe
Evgenia Medvedeva: This dish is from my childhood, it reminds me of the period from 7 to 14 years old. My grandmother made food that I would take with me to eat after workouts and in between. Such a big bag with containers. In the mornings, I would wake up and my grandmother would make me lunch-dinner. So today we have my typical “sports” lunch-dinner from my childhood – cutlets with mashed potatoes. It’s very tasty!
About ballet lessons
Evgenia Medvedeva: I always talked about how figure skating was the only thing in my life because my mom was a figure skater and there were no other options. In reality, I was also enrolled in a gymnastics-ballet section for the youngest children. When I was two or three years old, my mom took me to this section one and only time. Spoiler: I never appeared there again.
Why? All the children came in such a beautiful clothes: in tights, ballet shoes, and a skirt. My mom dragged me there in a red dress and red leggings, in socks and with a ponytail. I stood out from the rest of the children. Then all the children did tasks – walked on their toes, held their hands up, ran neatly, walked on their heels. While they walked counterclockwise, Zhenya twirled her arms, legs, and anything else, laughed, rolled on the floor, and didn’t listen to anyone. Then the teachers came up to my mom and said, “Please don’t come here anymore.
About training in the cold
Evgenia Medvedeva: When I was little, I had training on an open ice rink at -30°C. In the morning, I had my training, then my grandmother took me in a bundle, put on about 32 fur coats and 25 pants, packed a thermos of tea and cutlets with mashed potatoes. We walked to the open ice rink to practice the single Axel. I hated it, it was very cold.
About mindfulness
Evgenia Medvedeva: I only felt like an adult and mindful person after the Olympics. After all, I grew up a lot during the Olympics. Before that, my mom and grandmother protected me from everything adult that could happen in life. I didn’t have any household chores, they said, “Save your energy for training.”
About her first romance
Evgenia Medvedeva: My first love happened from the age of 16.5 to 18. When I was 14, I saw girls of my age holding hands with someone. I stood aside and was like, “Ew, God!”
What changed during my first romance? Skating, approach to competitions. It helped me relax a little. When you realize that the Olympics are just around the corner, you constantly worry, “Oh, the Olympics! What if something doesn’t work out for me?” And it doesn’t work out. It helped me unload. I thought, “If I’m not lucky in my career, I’ll be lucky in love” (laughs).
About her favorite music
Evgenia Medvedeva: I was a crazy Michael Jackson fan, loved his music at 12-14. Then I switched to rock – Metallica, System of a Down. When I switched to Rammstein, my mom said, “Can you listen to something else, please?” Then I switched to something more pop. People ask me, “How did you switch from Metallica to Egor Krid and Vanya Dmitrienko?”
And Danya Milokhin.
Evgenia Medvedeva: I don’t have his songs in my playlist, by the way.
And you won’t.
Evgenia Medvedeva: And I won’t! (Laughs).
I just personally know these guys and perceive music differently. An interesting experience. Although I thought I wouldn’t listen to Russian pop music, it’s not for me.
About weight control
Evgenia Medvedeva: They started following my weight closely when I turned 16. When it became a bit soft (shows her butt). What I, according to our wonderful journalists, expose in different countries.
On yellow press
Evgenia Medvedeva: Do you know how much lies there were after the Olympics? My friends didn’t believe in it, of course, they just sent it to me.
About man of her dreams
Evgenia Medvedeva: Tall, 180+ centimeters, brunette. It doesn’t matter if he’s older or younger than me. Sense of humor is very important. If you want a girl to fall for you, make her laugh.
Is your heart taken?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Partly (winks). Listen, every woman should have intrigue. That’s why I’m keeping this intrigue.
Blitz: Russia and Japan
Which language is more difficult: Russian or Japanese?
Evgenia Medvedeva: For me, it’s definitely Japanese. I tried to learn it, even made some progress. I wanted to take an exam at the beginner level, but I didn’t have time. This was during sports: competitions and all that.
What’s tastier: borscht or sushi?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Borscht.
Russian watermelon or Japanese muscat grapes?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Muscat grapes.
Peaceful Kyoto or crazy Moscow pace?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Moscow.
Will you watch our “Cheburashka” with your mom or Japanese “Sailor Moon”?
Evgenia Medvedeva: “Cheburashka”.
And with your boyfriend?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Then we won’t watch Sailor Moon, but probably some Tokyo Ghoul or Hayao Miyazaki movies.
Where are the applause louder: in Japan or in Russia?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Personally, for me, it’s in Russia. For other figure skaters, it’s in Japan. People clap, applaud and cheer equally for both local athletes and foreigners.
Where are stuffed toys thrown onto the ice more often: in Japan or in Russia?
Evgenia Medvedeva: In Japan.
If it’s about shopping, then where: in Tokyo or in Moscow?
Evgenia Medvedeva: In Moscow. Tokyo is very peculiar, they have a different fashion there. There is a street called Harajuku where you can meet, I’m not afraid of this word, freaks. They wear huge hairpins on huge platforms. It’s very cool, but there is a cult of colorfulness there. And I always seem to be in eternal negativity. If you take a picture of me in black and white, my clothes won’t change. That’s why I prefer Moscow shopping.
What’s your favorite color in clothing?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Beige, black, gray.
And overall, based on your mood?
Evgenia Medvedeva: Pink.
Favorite season?
Evgenia Medvedeva: It’s too hot in summer and too cold in winter. Therefore, early autumn when the temperature starts to drop, around +15 degrees Celsius, and the leaves turn golden.
About cooking
Evgenia Medvedeva: I love to cook, but I rarely do it. I like it. The kitchen is my favorite place in the house. I have a small fetish – I really like transparent dishes. I need all the cups to be perfectly clean, as if they were washed with a glass cleaner.
About food in the canteen
Evgenia Medvedeva: I loved all kinds of canteen cutlets and salads. In Novogorsk, chicken cutlets with ketchup were simply amazing. I never got in trouble for the ketchup, but I did for the pasta and rolls. Was there a time when you were caught with “banned” food? Well, I didn’t really hide it. I hoped that no one would notice what was on my plate.
