Kolyada qualified for the Games but did not go to the Olympics due to a positive test for coronavirus.

Mikhail Kolyada: Covid happened after the European Championships. Everyone started taking tests and getting ready, and I got a positive one. And moreover, it was positive for so long that I could not leave the apartment, could not come to training, couldn’t do anything. All this time, I just sat and waited.

Symptoms? Well, there was nothing special. We were constantly in touch with the doctors; it was under control.

The negative test came when the guys had already left for Krasnoyarsk (pre-Olympic training camp); it was literally in the last days, when they were supposed to move to Beijing. And I haven’t been skating all this time, and… Well, how? I needed to gain shape again. What if I were immediately sent? What would I show there?

I just accepted it. Things can happen in life. Of course, we work, we hope for something, but we don’t always get it the way we want. I’m ready for anything.

Was I ready for the Olympics? In general, yes. I didn’t watch the Olympics. Nothing at all. And I didn’t follow the results. It was complete apathy. I read about Valieva in the news. I didn’t care; I understood that if I didn’t go there, it meant that my life was now developing in a different way. That’s all. I can’t influence this situation in any way; I just accepted it, and that’s it.

There were no thoughts of retiring. Well, I like it! Why not continue skating if you like it?

It’s nice that he’s able to recover after the disappointment he could have felt back then… one of my favorite skaters, both in skating and in personality.
