This is stated in the official response of the International Skating Union (ISU) to the appeal of the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation regarding the removal of the Russian woman from the list of nominees. Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation stressed the inadmissibility of Shcherbakova’s nomination for the ISU award due to the support by Russian athletes, in particular, figure skaters, of the bloody war waged by their country against Ukraine.
“At its meeting in October 2022, the ISU Council considered the issue of nominations for the ISU Skating Awards-2022. The Council was informed that there is no legal basis to exclude Russian and Belarusian skaters who meet the criteria for the respective award categories, and therefore decided that any skaters (from these countries) may be included in the applicant lists. The jury will make its decisions based on the established criteria and voting results,” the ISU said in its response.
At the same time, the organization informed, it was decided that in case of victory of any representative of the specified countries, they will not be personally present at the award ceremony.
The ISU once again assured the Ukrainian Figure Skating Federation of its support for Ukrainian figure skaters and declared its solidarity with Ukraine. “We hope you have no doubt about ISU’s commitment in this regard,” the letter said.
