Ilia Averbukh: Are other skaters losing me as a choreographer (since Ilia has become an ice dancer coach – ed.)? No no no. I always liked to choreograph programs for single skaters most of all, ice dance is the most torment. Dances are so constrained by rules. Although, of course, the more rules, the more chances that something real will be born.

Just ice dances really require immersion, time. But the programs for our group, of course, I choregraph together with the guys. I work with pleasure, now I went to St. Petersburg, worked with a number of guys. I like, I love to do programs.

Averbukh also expressed hope that Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin will become leaders in ice dance when the French Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron retire.

Ilia Averbukh: If another pair appears now, like Papadakis / Cizeron, they will not win. Now another pair should appear. You can’t appear now in this style of atmospheric skating, very clean, very controlled, which leaves a light or deep aftertaste. Whoever appears in such a style now, he will not take the lead. Now the lead will take the one who will have a telling story, concise, without excessive emotions, but still with a story shown.

Who will it be? I see that Stepanova and Bukin. They, of course, have a great internal potential, God blesses, they will be able to show it at competitions.

These coaches are irrationally confident, they tend to take any foreign skaters as enemies, which won’t benefit Russians at all. There are and will be no better story-tellers than Papadakis/Cizeron, their feelings expressed are pure and beyond love. Time will tell. Nobody remembers Averbukh’s programs now, but they still remembers Anissina’s.
