“And here we get a confirmation that our girls are not the reason for female skaters from other countries to end their careers.” Russian coaches on the decision Alysa Liu to retire
Russian coaches comment on the decision of American skater Alysa Liu to end her career.
Alexander Zhulin: She’s definitely the best that UAS has had lately.
She understands that this is not real. If you beat [Anna] Shcherbakova and [Alexandra] Trusova – then yes. But so, why to skate? This is some kind of impersonal World Championships, plus, perhaps, she is tired of being in such stress, the girl herself is unusual. For example, my interest in figure skating fell very sharply after ours were banned.

Inna Goncharenko: Personally, I’m sad that she made such a decision. Perhaps she has some very serious reason. We were reproached that figure skating in Russia is very young, that there are no mature female skaters in our country. Here we go, an American athlete, I think she ends her career very early.
She is very interesting, bright athlete, who showed elements of ultra-c, she tried to perform the triple axel. We get confirmation that the reasons [for figure skaters from other countries to end their careers] are not in our girls. There is no leader – everyone has stagnated a bit, holding themselves back a little, why go through difficulties when you can win something the easier way, but the spectacle of figure skating is reduced.
