About progress in men’s skating

Evgenia Medvedeva: If you look at the results of the many past years, then as far as I can remember myself in seniors, boys and men did not bring the results that girls do. I think this is the specificity of our Russian figure skating.

But I can note that in the last season several boys have appeared who perform very well. There are promising boys – if the guys continue to work the same, and perhaps try harder somewhere, they will reach a high international level.

There are skaters like Misha Kolyada, who skated very well at the international level in the past season.

Over the past season or two, the boys have pulled up, I hope it continues.

About participation in the show of Ilia Averbukh “Anna Karenina”.

Evgenia Medvedeva: The day after tomorrow I’m flying to Sochi with our team. We will have a week of rehearsals there, and on the July 9th we start. For almost three months we will be in Sochi. Five days a week we will have the Anna Karenina show.

Ilia Averbukh and I have been cooperating for a long time, he has choreographed many programs for me – both competitive and exhibition. Cooperation has developed since 2015, all this time we are inseparable in productions and creativity.

Why am I participating in Anna Karenina at all? At some point, I realized that I want to be more universal, I want to be even more interesting for viewers in the show. I realized that I want to push the limits of figure skating, and that I want to learn to skate in pairs. It’s interesting to try different things.

I talked with the coaches how to solve this problem. Because I want to and I can’t help myself. The coaches advised me to write to Alexander Enbert – at the moment, already my partner in Anna Karenina. And long before the offer to participate in the show, Sasha and I began to skate. I wrote to him in direct on Instagram: Sasha, teach me to skate in a pair. He’s like: okay, let’s do it, when, where, I’m also interested.

We started skating in pair, and then I was offered the role of Kitty Shcherbatskaya in the play. And I didn’t tell Sasha or anyone. Just agreed. And then Sasha comes up to me and says: I was offered the role of Levin in Anna Karenina, I answer: nice to meet you, Kitty Shcherbatskaya. We did not know that, we were given the roles completely separately, but in the end it turned out that we are skating together.
