One of my first professional impressions of you is how wonderful you spoke in the mixed zone at the Junior Grand Prix Final in Turin a year and a half ago. Not all athletes at thirty respond to journalists as smartly as you did then at seventeen. Where does this come?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: My surname is not Russian. In the 90th, the guys were bullied for such a surname and origin. I faced it less and mostly all the offensive words were said behind my back, but still.

Since my childhood, my dad has been saying: “Lisa, they will always humiliate you. Let not in the face, but they will despise you behind your back. Therefore, you need to work three times harder.” I studied a lot with a Russian language teacher. My dad is Uzbek, a pupil of an orphanage, a Russian orphanage, and he learned Uzbek only at the age of 22.

I know all the grammar rules, I have good marks for the Unified State Exam in Russian. I have such thing that if I write something with a mistake, it will be unpleasant.

Everything will depend on how my career develops, but someday I would like to try something like being a host. I feel comfortable in this field. I’m not camera-shy, I don’t forget the words.

Plus, basically all my acquaintances are adults, and this also affects. I rarely communicate with peers.

I have to say that you look older than you are and that is a compliment. It’s not even so much about appearance, but about confidence.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Oh, yes at thirteen I looked like eighteen years old (laughs). Adult guys tried to meet me, and I even didn’t have a passport yet. I became independent very early because I started working to stay in ice dance. The coaches didn’t tell me “tell your mother this and that” – how much money is needed for the training camp, how much money for the hotel, what documents to collect – I solved these issues myself. When I started to get salary, my parents stopped giving me money for personal and work expenses.

In the first year of partnership with Nikita (Nazarov -ed) I had problems with mother and with food, and this also knocks the carelessness out of you.

In the second year I had the Unified State Exam, and I knew that if I don’t get the budget place, I wouldn’t go anywhere. That is, they did not try to scare me, there was really no money for study. And there are two budget places, and Nastya Skoptsova took one of them as the world junior champion. In fact, there was only one place left, and I approached this very responsibly, and I entered university.

Then there was the last season with Nikita, when I was sixteen. Then I more than just grew up, it seemed that I have aged in six months. It was a hard time, and it was not easy in sports. It’s funny, but at sixteen I thought that life is a very difficult thing.

Until I was twelve, I deceived myself that I was working and trying. And at twelve I suddenly realized that the coach actually sees everything – it’s first. Second, I have no result. Time is running out – third. And either I work very hard, or … what’s all this for? My parents took me to single skating, it was me who wanted to do ice dance, and this was my first adult decision.

What made you to fall in love with ice dance?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: I’ve always liked skating and spinning. I hated jumping, I didn’t have explosive muscles, I had underrotations, I was falling. But one summer I trained hard, my coach and I collected these triples. Lutz with an underrotation, salchow – toe loop. We thought that we would start winning. In September we came to the stage of the Russian Cup, and there Polina Tsurskaya with triple lutz – triple toe loop, jumping with her hands up. And not a single double jump in the program, only a double axel. And we realized with the coach that it was not we who did not work hard enough – we did our best. We didn’t even have any questions for ourselves. You just can’t catch up with them.

The next six months were difficult, nothing worked out for me. Then the 2014 Olympics happened, and I saw Lena and Nikita (Ilinykh – Katsalapov). I saw Lena, who just … L-e-n-a! She is enjoying herself, she is incredibly beautiful. I copied her for a long time. Well, not copied just understood that she was breathtaking as a girl, and I should be the same. That is, the decision to switch to ice dance was like my salvation, but I was silent for two months, I was afraid to tell my parents.

They say that ice dancing is doomed to a constant shortage of boys, and therefore it’s difficult for a girl to find a partner. Turns out, you refute this by your example?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Not really. I skated alone for two years before I teamed up with Nikita. For a while I’ve skated a little with Gosha Pokhilyuk, who is now a junior coach at Eteri Georgievna’s. This is funny. I just work with the younger Marianski group, and they have ice right before the older Tutberidze’s group. Therefore, we have one coaching room with Gosha. That is, the years go by, we all grow up, but still we all somewhere side by side.

In fact, now it is also difficult for a boy to find a girl. Grisha Smirnov has been skating without a partner for a year now. You can find, but it is difficult and time-consuming if you are looking for your best option.

Is it difficult to become a pair with a new partner?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: It’s not always the same. Nikita (Nazarov – ed) was very experienced and I learned a lot from him, and the coaches worked with us almost individually. With Andrei (Filatov) it was quick and easy, although he was very nervous – for some reason he believed that he was paired with a star. And I did not understand what was the matter. I’m not like Alena Savchenko. By chance became the second at worlds (junior), well, it happens, okay – now we work together and we are on an equal footing. So we paired up and started to skate immediately. It was a completely different sensation, not like with Nikita, but super comfortable.

With Egor (Bazin) it was not so, and I understand why. Andrei skated for two years with another partner in our group, he was already technically adjusted to the technique of Denis Eduardovich (Samokhin) and, accordingly, to mine technique. Egor is when I am up and he is down. He is to the left, I’m to the right. We even began to make a parallel with an inclination in different directions. It would seem a trifle, but due to the different slope, it no longer looks parallel. It was difficult to learn all dance transitions, not to skate with an “angle”, not to use toe picks, not to reach for each other in positions.

Why is it so important to skate in close positions and why are they needed at all?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Position is a frame. For example, if you relax your arms in finstep, then another person can fit between a boy and a girl, you start bouncing uneven, you bang against each other, and the edges also “fly off.” Why it’s important to skate close: the closer, the easier it is to control your body and legs. When a partner is far away, I don’t feel what he wants at all. The boy is leading, he can put a little pressure on my shoulder blade, and I already understand how I need to move. It turns out a well-coordinated mechanism.

Did you have any difficulties with some elements?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Twizzles were difficult to learn, because Egor catches his leg moving backwards, and I – moving forward. And I have been doing this for five years, and he has been doing this for fifteen! Egor agreed to adapt to me, but said that he did not feel confident in this element. Therefore, we do what is convenient for both.

For a long time, we were worried not about the elements, but about the transitions, so as not to come off each other. This is the lack of experience skating together. Now, of course, it is much easier, but choreographing the programs we can easily go in different directions. Egor did a great job. The further, the more difficult it’s, and at the age of 25, retraining to skate is like starting another sport. He adapts very quickly. He decided himself, he wants to, he does it himself. He works very hard. Probably, more than me, because he really has to relearn.

Please explain to the newbie in ice skating why twizzles are a difficult element?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: It’s like a quadruple jump for a single skater – uncontrollable. For example, when Sasha Trusova enters a quadruple, she can no longer do anything in the air. It’s the same with twizzles. If you entered the first turn of the twizzle, nothing can be done. It is important how you prepared mentally, how you strained your back and your entire muscle corset, how you took your leg, how you put your hands. If you are led or pulled a little – that’s it, you won’t save it. Even if it looks good, but in fact, instead of a twizzle you do a three turn or have a stop, it will not be counted as it should. And this is an expensive element, its loss costs a lot. There is a big gradation in points: if you execute it perfectly, the gap from your opponents can grow, and vice versa. Plus, since this is the most nervous element, the further performance is largely depends on it.

After what you said, I recall the Russian Nationals. How did you feel when you made a mistake on twizzles?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: I don’t even know myself why I failed twizzles there. It always happens at half-tones of sensations. But this is the beginning of the program, the second element, and the audience is – ahhhh! And I didn’t just stumble, I “flew”. Then I could not let go of this disappointment. Of course, we performed the dance to the end, I could not cry, but there was emptiness inside. Then Egor also made a mistake on the block (block of steps). In general, terrible performance. Thank you for being alive, as they say, for not falling anywhere else.

I remember how you cried in the kiss-and-cry after the rhythm dance.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Egor supported me very much. It’s good that it happened there. This is the first such negative experience when I let myself down. It is clear that in pairs mistakes are always divided into two, and this is how I feel about it, but I held on for many years and haven’t failed anything. Now I know how to work with it.

After analyzing the mistakes and after a while, did you manage to understand what exactly went wrong at the Russian Nationals? Physically you were prepared pretty good.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Failures happened because we thought to much that we need to become the third. You know, the general mood, including from outside, was felt. Like, “you will succeed, there is no one to compete with.” And it was not relaxing, but on the contrary. Honestly, it would be better if they told us that we are losers (laughs). We were judged well in the season, although it was clear that these were only stages of the Russian Cup, not international competitions. We understood that we were not skating on such scores – at the international level it would be minus seven – minus ten points. But we were looking more at the difference with others than at the scores. And this difference made us understand that we were kind of glad to be seen here. Of course, we wanted to use all our opportunities. If we were third, it would be such a beautiful American figure skating movie.

As a result, almost none of the contenders for bronze did not succeed in skating cleanly.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: There was something incomprehensible in Chelyabinsk. Maybe the season was so difficult itself, or it’s really the usual atmosphere of the Russian Nationals – I don’t know. But for the first time in my life I failed something at competitions. Nastya Skoptsova, who never fails twizzles, made a mistake on them. The rhythm dance simply didn’t go well for Annabelle and Andrei. Stable Anya Frolova stumbled. All the boys were falling.

When Mishina and Galliamov were skating their free program, I was afraid that they would break on every element. Live, on a speed, this is especially visible, well and I’m also a person who understands a bit. I see where someone starts to shake in different directions. Everyone was shaking.

I was so nervous myself. I asked the coaches to pinch me, because I was shaking. Egor has never seen me having with such an eyes. I’m usually positive, joke – partners were always more nervous, and I play the role of such a joker in the team.

And then, during the warm-up of a short dance, I just fell. On a stopper! This expression “sticky air” accurately describes the atmosphere in Chelyabinsk. Or it’s like you’re beaten with electric shock from all sides. I returned home with suah a relief.

And this is not even the Olympic season.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Yes, I don’t want to go to the next Russian Nationals (laughs). Everyone is happy that the off-season, there is time for preparation, and I’m already thinking about the end of December and what will happen when we start doing run-throughs for the Nationals. A month before the competitions, I switch to the “home – training – home” mode. I don’t work, I don’t see my friends: I’m in some kind of cocoon, where I spend all the time on recovery so not to die in training the next day.

I try not to think how many Olympic spots we have, how many pairs claim for them. Because in reality there is only one more or less vacant spot, and this increases the tension even more.

You did some artistically challenging dances, especially for the first season together. Why did you decide to bet on performances with a story and not just something abstract and lyrical?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: We understood that in the first season we wouldn’t skate cool, even if we wanted to. If, at the same time, the program has no idea, it will be boring, weak and we will lose to all more experienced pairs. Nobody except the French (Papadakis – Cizeron) can skate skate abstraction so ingenious that it will take your breath away. It is given to them, but not to me. The coaches showed us the original ballroom dance as an idea and we began to choreograph. During the season, if a question arose about a piece that we did not understand, we began to analyze it with the choreographer. For example, here we are quarreling, because Egor’s hero drinks, and I wash the floors at home and do my daily routine. If we quarrel, how do we behave? We discussed all this. After the test skates, we changed a lot, because the specialists divided into two camps. Some said – cool. Others – why are you shaking, why are you showing old age this way. Some say you are overplaying. Others – too little acting, nothing is clear, more is needed.

In this two sentences you just described the essence of judging in ice dance.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: (Laughs.) Exactly. And what we had to do? “Too much acting” the phrase of my career, I hear it all the time. By the way, at the Grand Prix we also tried adding gray strands to the hair to complement the look. Some experts said – super, now everything is clear. Others – guys, what are you doing, it’s not a theater. And since at the Russian Nationals there was one specialist in the judging panel who did not approve the gray strands, we did not dye them again.

What about the new season, do you already have ideas for new programs?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: In the rhythm dance we have the blues, we chose disco as the second rhythm. We could also take hip-hop and street dancing, but decided to take disco. The free dance is almost ready. We are working on it with Dina Akhmetgareeva and Fedya Polyansky. These are exactly the guys whose idea we took for a free dance about old people.

Will you have a vacation?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: It is planned. The first two weeks of June, just before the training camp. I would like to go to the sea, because the last time I was there was in 2013. And it so happened that one year we planned, but there was a crisis, and then … Then I switched to ice dance.

How did switching to ice dance affect the seaside vacation?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Financially. The parents said: “If you want to dance, skate at your own expense. Well, we will help you, of course, drive you. “

I say: “I have a training camp, I need 150 thousand (rubles).” They: “Ok, look for money.” And I spent the whole vacation working on skating rinks, and then went to the training camp with this money, and so on for three years in a row. Another time, either there was no money, or some other reason, but I could not afford to go. After silver medal at the junior world championship, I started to get a good salary and was saving for vacation, but covid started.

If not to the sea, then we want to go to Kiev and Odessa with a friend. My friend was in Kiev, she really liked it, and my friends from Odessa all advise me to come. Again, there is also a sea in Odessa. Let not lie for two weeks on a beach, but at least rest with soul.

Finalizing this season, tell us, what are your impressions of the team event?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Cool, almost every second message in direct was about people finding out about ice dance at this event. Like, you got into Alina Zagitova’s team, and we realized: “Wow, ice dance is beautiful! Now we will follow.” That is, people knew that there was pair skating, but they thought that we and the pairs were the same thing. And I asked other guys, they had similar responses because of Zhenya Medvedeva. Thanks to their favorites Alina and Zhenya, many fans found out about other athletes and began to cheer for them. This all develops figure skating.

Egor even got a “tick” on Instagram (laughs) (verified account). Some bullshit started in the comments, and he sent a request for account verification. He then left for Togliatti, and, apparently, according to comments, likes and views, he was the most active in the city – his request was approved.

In general, it will be ideal – if next time such a competition takes place and we are invited there – turn on the airplane mode on the phone for two days after the competition. Because it was a little … a little too much.

Do you mean public attention, including negative?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Of course, there was such a mess. People look for problems where there are none. I was asked, and even before the competitions started: “How do you feel about Zhenya?” How can I feel? Before the First Channel Cup I saw Zhenya twice in my life, and talked to her only once. I hardly know her. It just so happened that we met with Alina before the Olympics. It was when Diana (Davis) and I skated in the same group. There was the 2017 Rostelecom Grand Prix, and Diana introduced me and Alina to each other at the stands. Therefore, I was so glad that Egor and I got to Alina’s team.

And in general it was so absurd when the fans of the two teams were pushed against each other. We are one team, it would be okay if there was a Russian team against a world team. We didn’t have separate locker rooms, we all sat in one and talked as usual. And no one said that we are better, and you are worse. And the main thing that we also celebrated together later (laughs). “Blue team” and “red team”.

And physically and psychologically, how was this experience? Alina and Zhenya were so tired at the press conference, as if they skated together with each team member.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: I thought that Zagitova would break my fingers – you can put this in the headline as a clickbait. (laughs) I am emotional, but Alina is more restrained. But there was some performance, we joined hands and that person skated clean. And she decided that it was lucky. And when I then removed my hand, I immediately heard: “Khudaiberdieva !!! Hand!!!” There was a funny vidos from a fancam, where I just straighten my hair, and Alina grabs my hand.

For me, the most difficult thing was to watch the boys. When Aliev skated, I sat under kiss and cry, because I could not watch, and from the way my hand twitched, I understood how he was skating there.

It was physically difficult. You are at the arena from ten in the morning to eight in the evening. While you got on the bus, came home and had dinner – already half past ten. You are all in make-up, with a thick layer of hairspray and still excited, on adrenaline. The next morning I had to wake up at seven o’clock, and I was swollen, without voice and generally without strength. And how to go to training? And there is really nothing inside. Empty. But somehow, on the adrenaline everyone skated.

Have you faced criticism for changing partners?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Sure. And even from those people who know the whole situation. They say, you have a reputation … But I am sure that despite the fact that ice dance is a team story, it is very tied to individuality. And if I feel that everything is bad, then I need to talk to my partner. And I will be glad if they also start to treat me like that. I always ask Egor: if something doesn’t suit you, tell me! Some time ago he said and I realized that at some points I can reconsider my attitude to work. A man works hard, he came to another city to skate with me, I respect him and I want him to be comfortable too. That is, dissatisfaction does not necessarily come to parting. Ideally, it leads to development.

But if I tell a person that I am not satisfied, that he does not come to physical training and choreography, refuses to work with all the specialists I offer, and nothing changes … This is not about loyalty at all, this is about work.

But with Andrei Filatov nothing like that happened?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Everyone did not understand why we parted, because there was not a single parameter in him as a partner that would not suit me. It just happened. I understood that moving to seniors as number four is not what I want. Therefore, I responded to Egor’s offer.

This can be compared to when you are working at a familiar job with a good salary and in a great team, and you are offered a position in the coolest project, which perhaps will fail, or maybe it will succeed. I am not the kind of person who would say: “Well, no, everything suits me, I have been working with my director for so many years.” I don’t want to waste an opportunity just because only one in a million will succeed, and I take risks. If I hadn’t tried, I would have regretted my whole life.

Jokes about the frequent change of partners are always with me now, I have even begun to joke about it myself.

Talking about you, experts usually point out a soft skating, energy and powerful charisma of attractiveness. What would you name as your strengths and weaknesses?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: It’s hard to talk about yourself. But I can judge by our group. Many younger girls try to look at me, at Masha Kazakova – at the older ones. We have, for example, Katya Katashinskaya – I am pleased that I see myself in her a couple of years ago. She is the same diligent hard worker, does what she was told. Strong in the sense that when necessary, “holds her tongue.” Even with tears in his eyes, but works.

I’m not capricious – there are girls who cry when they have to do two run-throughs. Or when it’s hard for them to skate.

I can’t be rude with the coach in terms of not doing something. That is, I treat them with respect, and it seems to me that they see and appreciate it, and therefore they work with me a lot.

Of the minuses – I push weakly, not so powerful compared to Egor. Therefore, I am working on looking more voluminous on the ice.

And where does such charisma come from? This ability to capture the attention of the entire stadium.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: This charisma in me was brought up by Maria Valerievna (Borovikova). Fifteen is the age when you turn from a child into a girl, and it is very important not to remain a gray mouse, a modest girl. Maria Valerievna explained that I had to work with the audience, must find a point at the stands – a judge or a spectator, and if they are not there, imagine them.

I remember how we started to skate a piece of the dance, and she made sure that I looked at her, and not at the ice. To have contact. She told me all the time how beautiful and cool I was, the best. But in those moments when I was trying too hard, she could say: “Stop, don’t make it look.” She taught me to present myself with dignity. To go on the ice not with the message: “Everyone look at me quickly!”, But like allowing them to look at me. Like: “I’ll go now, and you can watch.” For a dancer, this confidence is insanely important.

Surprised to hear it. I know many opposite examples, when coaches naggs the girls for some far-fetched absurd flaws.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: I know such stories. “Why is your hair so long? Why is your hair so short? What’s with the face? You are ugly”. There are specific examples, and every time I am surprised, because I have not faced such. If you tell a person that he is ugly and faded, then he will broadcast this to those around him. This is especially critical for an athlete, because the coach is even closer to us than our parents. For example, I see coaches more often than mom and dad.

A coach is an authority, and when your authority is in love with you as a talent, you think all the time that they believe in you. This helps in everyday life when you have heavy loads. I think: “Well, how can I fail something now? I will try for Denis Eduardovich and Maria Valerievna.”

And when your closest person says: “Your eyes are small, can you do something about it?” You’re like, “Complexes, hello …” This is very wrong.

Have you ever had any complexes?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: I have. Weight is my main story. In fact, I am preparing a large project in the form of a monologue. I am looking for girls who are also ready to talk about their experiences. I think someday it will come back to me that I am so brave, but so far I have nothing to lose. And while I’m young, I’m not afraid of anything. I don’t want to be silent.

Now I’m trying to contain my surprise and bewilderment, to be honest, but … weight? Lisa, you have always been very slim.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Many people write to me, they say you are slim, you cannot have any complexes with that. As if there is no excess weight, then everything is ok. I developed an unhealthy attitude towards food. At one point, I was eating 150 calories a day. I got up on the scales ten times a day.

150 calories (equivalent – about two large bananas. ed”) ???

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Yes. There is no need to weigh the dancer often, because we are not so dependent on the extra hundred grams, we do not have jumps. For us, the problem is two kilograms, for example. But it is better to focus on appearance, rather than numbers. And the stress of constant weighing is insane.

In one team, for example, I watched the scene, as they say to the girl, touching her shoulder: “You arms got fat”. I see these girls later. I see how they count calories, how they try to eat on the sly somewhere, because they are shy to eat in front of everyone. How they look for mirrors everywhere and check how they look there. They touch their belly all the time to see if it sticks out. Hold their breath next to the coach. I just want to shout about it, because you can’t see anything of this behind the glossy cover. And health and psyche cannot be returned. I’ll never be the same, let’s say. I can go into remission, but I will never get rid of my problems against the background of an unhealthy relationship with food.

Many would have objected that this is sport and here you have to be thin.

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: I support the fact that you need to take yourself seriously. You can’t lie down and eat cake because you have a day off. I’m not saying that you need to ignore any control and not limit yourself in anything. I am in sports, a lot depends on me, and I cannot afford to be out of shape. Boys also have a tendency to get out of shape. And it would be better if both partners worked on this in the same way. Because if after working on lifts the boy starts to feel some pain, then the girl catches sidelong glances at herself, even if she is super skinny. It should not be so that at the training camp the girls run cross-country at “+30 Celsius”, and the boys are resting in the shade.

Is ice dances so much easier for boys?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: Well, it’s only about weight, they are also bullied, for example for their appearance and presentation. Egor, for example, was told: “Don’t laugh, always be serious.” Nikolai Yuryevich (Nikonov, choreographer in the group of Samokhin and Borovikova – ed) is now telling him: “You are so pumped up, handsome, show yourself. You are cool!” And I say that too. Egor does not have this inner feeling that he is cool. He says: “It seems to me that I will do this and will look stupid and awkward.” I answer: “No, you are cool, and you will look even better.” He just wasn’t told about it.

Closing the topic of weight and nutritional problems, tell me who is to blame for this and how can this be fixed?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: The system is to blame. Skaters work with coaches who themselves went through all these group weighings, insults and themselves often have problems with nutrition and body perception. And they do not always understand how they can work differently. But everything is changing. I try to convey to young girls that an eating disorder is not a joke. That you need to start working with a psychologist. That you need to love yourself.

What do you need to do or wear to feel irresistible?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: To wash my hair is the most important thing. With a makeup, I become a little more confident, but I feel fine without it. And in terms of clothing, I’m such a person that I don’t even have sports clothes. I don’t wear a hoodie, sweatpants, or anything bulky. That is, I’m always dressed for going out. And I can’t wear the same clothes for two days – at least something has to change. Maybe my mother taught me that.

In general, a dress, shoes and a clean hair are enough for irresistibility.

Speaking of dresses, I can’t help but ask. How did the people around you, your loved ones, the coaches react to your dress with a breathtaking neckline atthe draw at Russian Nationals?

Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva: It seems to me that most part did not approve, but they definitely noticed. I caught a couple of girls’ piercing looks on myself then (laughs).

Dad was clearly not happy. But he is a wise man, I adore him. Said: “Of course, I didn’t like it, but it’s up to you.” Many people wrote something like: “Oh my God, what did she dressed for.”

I don’t know, I felt confident.
