Eteri Tutberidze: The girls has gone through the path of samurai

Short comment from the iron lady of Russian figure skating Eteri Tutberidze:

Zhenya has been almost invincible for two seasons, but the situation with injury and illness weakened her, and everything changed at once. I would also like to thank FFKKR (Federation of figure skating in Russia), which has done everything possible to help to walk this path of samurai, solving our problems every year, every day.

All I can do myself is just go there, on the ice and coach. But the result consists of a huge number of components. If the people who support us are not there, we will not achieve anything. I make this result together with other coaches – Sergei Dudakov, Daniel Gleyhengauz. I want to add that we don’t start preparing to the next Olympics now, this work began four years ago.

I especially loved the last phrase.

As someone on Facebook said, it wasn’t Evgenia’s physical state that cost her the gold, it was the fact that Alina’s program was choreographed to earn more points than Evgenia’s was, so there was never a hope of Evgenia beating Alina even if Evgenia skated flawlessly.

I agree, all jumps in the 2nd half of the program including 3Lz-3Lo gave a lot of points.

I’m going to say a terrible thing but I don’t see much difference in PCS between Zhenya and Alina. They’re both not Carolina, no matter what the scores say. I saw them live and I was a bit disappointed because on TV they look much better. So, Alina has a technical advantage and I don’t think that Evgenia is that better in PCS to beat the gap in TES.

Now, I’m going to say something much more terrible. I like Alina artistically more than Zhenya! Her Don Quichote is suitable for 15-year old, it still needs polishing, but it’s a cheerful program for a young girl. Zhenya doesn’t convince me artistically at all. Too much pantonime and she is too young to pull off Anna Karenina. Maybe she could portray a younger character? Anna Karenina could be suitable for Ksenia Stolbova, who is much more mature artistically and has had experience in artistically difficult programes.

Agree, Alina’s program needs lots of polishing, because bellet is not just a tutu) But this program creates victorious mood. The music is powerful, it’s easy for the audience to get involved in the performance, they hear the musical accents, they know where to clap and how to show their support. Zhenya’s program is too dark for Olympics and for such a young girl. You hear this train and you understand that it’s coming and it’s not a Hogwarts express. In one of her interviews Zhenya said that Anna Karenina was young, so this book also should be read by young people and that she herself was a Karenina during a program…..I disagree. Well, she might think so, but….Yes, Anna was young, but the times were different. This is a story of wife, mother….and mistress. I don’t think it’s a good choice of character for such a young girl as Evgenia.
