On the 22nd, Shoma Uno (28) and Marin Honda (24) updated their Instagram pages, revealing that they will take on the challenge of ice dance together. Here’s a translation of their comments posted on Nikkansports.

“This time, Shoma Uno and Marin Honda have decided to form an ice dance team and will take on the challenge of competition starting from the new season.

October 2024. From the day we made this decision, we have set our sights on the goal of participating in the Olympics and have continued to dedicate ourselves to ice dance. Every day, we move forward with strong determination, embracing new challenges. Through our competitive careers, we have experienced many emotions – both difficulties and joys. Because we are together, we can share feelings that only the two of us understand, and we will continue to build days that satisfy us.

We would be delighted to share the many sights and experiences we encounter during this challenge with everyone who supports us. We ask for your continued support for ‘Shomarin’ as we embark on this journey.”

Honda announced her retirement in January 2024, and Uno followed in May. Since then, they have performed together in ice shows. In Uno’s self-produced show “Ice Brave,” launched in June last year, the two drew attention for taking on ice dance together as a new endeavor.

In an interview in April, Uno commented on his perspective regarding the discipline. He said that he had never considered switching to ice dance during his singles career, but the turning point came when he and Honda performed together in “One Piece on Ice.” “If we’re going to do this, I don’t want it to just be a simple ‘collaboration’ between two singles skaters. To surprise people, that’s important,” he said, expressing his commitment to seriously pursuing official competitions.

Shoma Uno, who made a surprise announcement about switching to ice dance, and Marin Honda held a press conference in Tokyo on the May 22nd.

Uno said, “We have decided to form an ice dance team and take on the challenge of competition. Around October 2024, the two of us made this decision, and since then, we have been seriously dedicating ourselves to ice dance.”

Honda added, “We are preparing to compete as athletes starting from competitions this fall. Every day, we want to keep practicing so we can achieve the goals we’ve set together.”

When asked about their “goal,” Uno prefaced, “This is a very important part, so please let us say it ourselves,” and, in unison, they declared:

Uno and Honda: “Our goal is to compete at the 2030 Olympics!”

Uno explained that he was the one who invited Honda, and they are aiming for the ice dance qualifiers in October, which lead to the Japanese Nationals at the end of the year.
