“Maybe it will motivate her to keep working, to keep skating, and to go to the next Olympics. So it won’t just be one participation without a flag and anthem.” Daniil Gleikhengauz on Adeliia Petrosian’s performance at the 2026 Olympics

Coach Daniil Gleikhengauz commented on Adeliia Petrosian’s sixth-place finish at the 2026 Olympics, noting that only a clean skate with two quads could have secured her victory. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“It’s hard to evaluate the skate because the first quad toe loop didn’t work out. Because of that, it became clear to Adeliia during the program that it definitely wouldn’t be enough to place high. But that’s life – sometimes things just don’t go perfectly.
It’s not as if she landed it 10 out of 10 times and then nerves got in the way or something went wrong. The jump was always unstable, and we saw that in practice. Still, it seemed to get better every day, she landed it in warm-up.
That attempt… Honestly, I don’t think she needed to do it, but Adeliia always does this – she goes for an ultra-c element before taking her starting position. That attempt was perfect, and of course, it’s frustrating that it didn’t happen in the program.
But she fought regardless, she didn’t give up on the program, and she completed all the other elements with dignity. Overall, given the level of pressure and responsibility she was under, she performed respectably.
I know she’s extremely upset and blames herself, but I tried to support her as best I could. We talked, but of course, she’s still emotional, which is natural. I can’t say I’m happy either, but I’m older and more experienced and know that this is life – sometimes things go differently.
It’s important to find positive moments in this. Maybe it will motivate her to keep working, to keep skating, and to go to the next Olympics. So it won’t just be one participation without a flag and anthem – maybe in four years, things will be different. I think that would be a beautiful story. But who knows what tomorrow will bring.
What does she say? Just that it didn’t work out, that she understands everything. What is there to discuss? It was one element she missed. To win in our situation – without ranking, without anything – she needed to skate perfectly with two quads.
If that had happened, maybe it would have been enough. Or maybe not – it’s hard to say. But after the fall on the quad, there was nothing more to discuss, and the result was absolutely fair,” Gleikhengauz said on Okko.
