Anjelika Krylova: “Even a great skater like Cizeron needs time to adjust to his partner. He had high hopes that he could pull it off here. I feel sorry, but he couldn’t. Chock and Bates should have won the Olympics.”

Olympic medalist and coach Anjelika Krylova believes the American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates deserved to win gold in ice dance at the 2026 Olympics, rather than the French pair Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“I believe it would have been fairer to place Chock and Bates higher – based on their performance, the cleanliness of their skating, and all aspects. The French did not skate cleanly: they made mistakes on the twizzles, in the step sequence, and the overall performance was not optimal.

Apparently, politics played a role – there’s always politics at the Olympics. But I don’t really agree with the result in ice dance, and many people I spoke with share my view. The French pair delivered a champion-level skate, but not at this event.

Like many others, I was rooting for them, but on that day, things didn’t go perfectly for them. In my opinion, Chock and Bates should have won the Olympics. I think participation in the team event exhausted everyone. The free dance performances weren’t the best for anyone except the Canadians.

Chock and Bates skated cleanly, but emotionally, they were at their limit. It was very tough for them, and the Olympic-level performance everyone expected just wasn’t there. As for the French, this was probably their worst performance.

Yes, it’s a new partnership, and it was difficult for them, since it’s hard to get used to each other in just one season. It was especially tough for Cizeron. They were good and performed well at the European Championships and Grand Prix.

But throughout the season, there were mistakes, because even a great skater like Cizeron needs time to adjust to his partner. He had high hopes that he could pull it off here. I feel sorry, but he couldn’t,” Krylova said.
