Alexander Zhulin commented on the level of women’s figure skating at the 2026 Olympics, comparing it to the dominance of Russian skaters in the past. Here’s a translation of his comments.

“Our level of skating four years ago was phenomenal. No one can come close to that level – Trusova, Valieva, Shcherbakova. If Valieva hadn’t received a four-year ban, she would have easily torn everyone apart. But today, Liu skated amazingly. Yes, without any quadruple jumps. But it was fantastic women’s skating. Right now, we’re in a period where there are no Russian figure skaters. And others are taking advantage of that,” Zhulin told “Sport-Express.”

Judith, as harshly as it sounds, what he actually says is “We lost because others were better”. And he is not the only Russian expressing it, Tarasova did it and some others too. And this is a huuuge step forward for them and it is the first time in history. Not the ususal “it was unfair judging, they hate us etc, etc” They really admit other skaters were better. And it is a simple true. The girls before Adeliia were better and stronger. As for Adeliia – I hope she can manage emotionally, but if she is to stay in the sport, this sport has to change in Russia, with less focus on disposable young athletes with Ultra-C and more focus on sustainable practice methods and strong skating skills. Because the last ones are quite poor in Russia compared to other power house nations. Maybe all this comments, as raw and undiplomatic some of them are, can be a first step towards something more human anyway.

OMG, what a horrible thing to say about Petrosian. What a bastard! She did very well, just didn’t have the training time due to injury and lack of international experience. I hope she can rise above this garbage.
