American figure skater Ilia Malinin shared his gratitude for support from hockey star Alexander Ovechkin and expressed openness to visiting Russia in the future when global tensions ease. Here’s a translation of his comments.

American figure skater Ilia Malinin spoke about the support he has received from Russian hockey player and Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin. Previously, Ovechkin gifted Malinin skate laces.

“It’s a great honor to receive a gift from Ovi. He has supported me over the past few years of my career, and it’s a huge privilege to have a celebrity nearby to look up to. He inspires hope and wishes me luck,” said two-time world champion Malinin.

Today, February 7, Malinin will perform his short program in the team event at the 2026 Olympics in Milan.

Malinin also says a trip to Russia could be possible in the future.

“I don’t want to think about it just yet. But I’m sure that when things return to normal, it would be possible,” said the 21-year-old athlete.
