Mone Chiba faced challenges in the free skate at the Four Continents Championships, highlighting areas for improvement ahead of the Milan-Cortina Olympics. Here’s a translation of her comments.
Chiba, last year’s champion, admitted, “The main reason was a lack of power,” looking dejected. Her total score was also more than 15 points short of her best, leaving her with concerns heading into her first Olympics. “Overall, I lacked speed and momentum. That’s something I need to address quickly before the Olympics,” she said.
Jump mistakes that had persisted since practice and the SP could not be corrected by the end of the competition. Still, Chiba found some relief in having clear areas to work on, saying, “There are reasons for both the good and bad parts.” She cited instability in how she distributed her weight on her skate blades and an accumulation of invisible fatigue from the Grand Prix series. “I keenly feel that I need to train every day for the next two weeks in a more powerful state, so I just have to get myself into better shape,” she resolved.
Concluding the competition, Chiba analyzed, “The main reason was that I lacked overall power. If I can fix just that, I think my body will follow, so that’s the only thing I need to focus on.”
Although the result left her with issues to address before the Olympics, which are now just about two weeks away, she remained positive: “I want to be able to say I’m in better shape than yesterday. From here, I’ll just keep working to improve my condition.”
