Olympic silver medalist Alexandra Trusova confirmed she never left figure skating, explaining her journey through injuries, motherhood, and her ongoing commitment to the sport. She also explained her decision to resume training with Eteri Tutberidze rather than Evgeni Plushenko. Here’s a translation of her comments.
In August 2025, Trusova gave birth to a son. She later resumed training.
“I never even thought that I had quit. I never finished. To come back, you have to finish, and I never finished. That’s why I never announced my retirement. I always knew I wouldn’t just say I was done, because… I don’t know why so many people do that. I never intended to do that. I could never just say I was finished.
No matter how many times I competed, I never thought, ‘That’s it, I’ll never compete again.’ Well, except after the Olympics. But after the Olympics doesn’t count – that’s just emotions.
I had various injuries. First, I had back problems, then with my hip. I don’t know if I should say this, but I actually wanted to compete at the Russian Nationals in 2023. The 2024 Russian Nationals, but it’s held at the end of 2023. I was preparing, set my programs. And when we asked if I could compete, they said no, because you didn’t go through the qualifying events. So I was preparing even in 2023.
Then, time passed, and I went to training camps. That’s when I told Evgeni Viktorovich [Plushenko] that if I restored my quad lutz, I wanted to go to the test skates. When I did restore it, we asked the federation if I could – and they allowed it.
After that, I knew I didn’t want to enter the season. First, of course, because there are no international competitions. For me, it’s basically pointless to skate now. As for the Olympics, everything was so unclear: would we be allowed to compete or not? And even if we were, only one person would go. And I didn’t think I’d get into such shape to be the best in Russia.
[My son] Misha is my dream since I was 16. I’ve wanted children since I was 16. So I decided I’d have a child first, and then return.
I’m in working, normal shape. Considering that I’m breastfeeding. Many doctors say it’s very hard to get into shape while breastfeeding. So I sincerely hope that as soon as I stop, my form will shoot up. But honestly, I feel fine, everything is comfortable,” Trusova said in her vlog.
“When I decided for sure that I would try – because, as Makar [Ignatov, her husband] said, if you don’t try, you’ll regret it later – the question was: should I return with Evgeni Viktorovich [Plushenko] or with Eteri Georgievna [Tutberidze]? Because I have a good relationship with both, and I’m comfortable training with either. It was, honestly, difficult.
All through my pregnancy, I kept thinking, who would I choose in the end? It’s a shame you can’t have both of them. It’s really sad.
I decided on Eteri Georgievna, because I spent the most years of my career training with her, and I feel more comfortable working and competing with her. When you go to compete with her, it always feels like you’re under protection.
I don’t know how to explain it, but I’ve trained in many places. And when you go out there with Eteri Georgievna, it’s like you have a shield, and nothing else matters. I probably never felt that way with anyone else.
So when I finally decided to come back, I went and talked to Eteri Georgievna, and she supported me. Even during my pregnancy, she said, yes, you’ll be able to come back, no problem. But she was surprised that I wanted to try,” Trusova said in her vlog.
