On January 17, Yuma Kagiyama (22) declared that he will incorporate a quadruple flip into his free skate at the Milano-Cortina Olympics, which begin on February 6. Here’s a translation of his comments.
Speaking to the press at his training base in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Kagiyama expressed strong determination: “I want to show all the skills I have at the Olympics. I have no intention of playing it safe.”
By adding the flip to his previous lineup of a salchow and two toe loops, Kagiyama will attempt three types of quadruple jumps for a total of four quads, aiming to boost his technical score. Earlier this year, he and his choreographer revised his program set to the opera “Turandot” for the Olympic version. In practice that day, with the music playing, he successfully landed all seven jumps, including the quad flip, and said, “I was able to jump with a comfortable speed and timing,” expressing confidence.
At his first Olympics in Beijing, Kagiyama won the silver medal. “I want to go for the result. I’m ready to beat the version of myself from four years ago,” Kagiyama said.
