Russian pair skater Dmitrii Kozlovskii criticized the level of the women’s event at the European Championships, arguing that the current product is not marketable and mainly interests only the athletes and their close circles. Here’s a translation of his comment.
“Thirty-eight singles skaters – let’s be honest, it was hard to watch in terms of overall quality. When we got to the top skaters, the quality of the programs and performances improved. But out of 38 participants, only two had clean skates…
I would actually say that this situation with 38 participants demonstrates a very serious problem. We need to understand that sport doesn’t solve some super-important tasks. First and foremost, sport is a business. It should be a business. And 38 athletes is not a product that can be sold with quality.
If these 38 athletes had quad jumps, triple axels, perfect performances – maybe then it could be sold. But under current conditions, the European Championships in women’s singles is, in fact, a tournament that primarily interests the athletes themselves, who want to win some kind of award.
It’s interesting to their parents and close circles. For the most part, about 95%. Otherwise, it’s not something people are willing to pay money for. I think the number of people in the stands highlights this. It’s the truth. It’s unpleasant to hear, but it’s the truth,” said European pairs champion Kozlovskii.
