Daniil Gleikhengauz, who works with Eteri Tutberidze’s team, shared a memory of how he and figure skater Anna Shcherbakova had to climb over a fence to get back to their hotel after performances at the Grand Prix in France. Here’s a translation of his comment.

“It was during COVID, with Anya and Alena at the Grand Prix in France. There was still a ‘bubble’ – no one was allowed to leave the hotel, you could only go out, get on the shuttle to the rink, and enter the rink. The competition was over, there were exhibition performances, and I arrived at the rink. Alena, I think, was in the first group, and Anya had won and was in the second group, finishing last.

I was at the rink when Anya called me and said, ‘Daniil Markovich, there’s no bus.’ I said, ‘Why should there be one?’ (smiles). She said, ‘It comes every half hour.’ I replied, ‘Didn’t you want to check the schedule? The last bus left an hour ago.’ She had decided to go back and return just in time for her performance.

We were in the ‘bubble,’ but to be honest, I had to break the rules so we could make it in time. I ran out of the rink, took a taxi, went to the hotel, and picked her up. The hardest part was getting back in without anyone noticing we were breaking the ‘bubble.’ So we climbed over some fence so no one would see us, sneaking past the security guards and the barrier to get back to the rink (laughs),” Gleikhengauz said in a New Year’s special episode of Okko’s show.
