Eteri Tutberidze: “Every time the music starts, treat it as a competition simulation. So, you fell. Hard. Now get up and skate ten times better than you would have otherwise. Of course, it’s difficult. But you have to train for that.”

Eteri Tutberidze commented on Daria Sadkova’s performance at the Russian Nationals, emphasizing the importance of training for resilience after mistakes in competition. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“Dasha’s performance… [smiles] I don’t scold them at all, because it’s their athletic career, it’s their fate. But I do try to explain to them that everything comes from training.

There was the first fall, which completely threw her off – maybe because of her breathing, maybe because of some psychological imbalance.

If it were practice, 100% Dasha would have stopped, recovered, stood for a bit, thought things over, and maybe, ten minutes later, would have skated beautifully.

There’s no such opportunity in competition. I always tell them: every time the music starts, treat it as a competition simulation. So, you fell. Hard. Now get up and skate ten times better than you would have otherwise. Of course, it’s difficult. But you have to train for that.

And here, she wasn’t ready. She shut down and wasn’t prepared to get back into it.”
