Ari Zakarian discussed Ilia Malinin’s readiness for his first Olympics, expressing strong confidence in his preparation and mental strength. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Q: Malinin recently set a record by landing seven quadruple jumps. What surprise might he bring to the Olympics?

Ari Zakarian: Only he himself can answer that question. At the Olympics, he will be fully prepared – I believe in him very much.

Q: The Russian press is actively following Malinin and supporting him. Does he read what is written about him?

Ari Zakarian: I think he keeps track of everything. I also read carefully what is written in Russia. I’ve seen commentators’ statements who aren’t thrilled with Ilia. I’ve heard some not-so-pleasant reviews.

Q: This will be Malinin’s first Olympics, and the pressure is enormous. Is there any anxiety?

Ari Zakarian: Right now, everything is fine with him. Preparation is going according to plan, without any problems. He is calmly getting ready for the U.S. Championships and then for the Olympic Games. Mentally, I think he is ready. Of course, there is pressure, but his coaches and choreographers have done a great job. The main thing is to avoid injuries and illness; the rest will fall into place.”

Oh no, Ari. How dare people have opinions or their own favorites? Not everyone liked Yuzuru, not everyone liked Nathan, not everyone liked Plush and not everyone likes Ilia. As they say: to please all people and every heart is an impossible and masterless art.
Like, personally I can appreciate Ilia’s athleticism, and that he constantly pushes to improve in every aspect of skating. I respect the athlete he is and I admire his guts. He can only beat himself at the coming Olympics and if he wins even bringing only 80% of what he’s capable of, it’ll still be very deserved. He’s still not one of my favorite skaters and I find the voiceovers in his FP music atrocious.
