The Japanese Nationals, which also serve as the final selection event for the Milan-Cortina Olympics next February, open on the 19th at Tokyo’s Yoyogi Gymnasium. On the 18th, during official practice, Ami Nakai (17), who finished second in the women’s event at this month’s Grand Prix Final, landed three triple axels (and showcased her strong form. Here’s a translation of her comments.

“The stage I’ve been aiming for most is right in front of me. This is a chance I absolutely can’t miss,” she said, her eyes shining as she aims for her first Olympic appearance.

At this month’s Olympic preview GP Final, Nakai won the silver medal as the top Japanese woman. Although her condition dipped right after the event, she has recovered as her fatigue faded. “I’ve been able to build a good wave of momentum. I’m heading into this competition in a similar state to before the GP France, when I was in my best form this season,” she said with a bright expression.

“My position is different from last year. The sense of tension is different too, but beyond overcoming that is the Olympics,” said the 17-year-old.
