Choreographer Ilia Averbukh believes the top six at the Russian Nationals are fully competitive with the top six at the Grand Prix Final, highlighting the high level of Russian figure skating. Here’s a translation.

“The Russian Nationals are undoubtedly an important event. I really hope this will be the last national championship that isn’t a qualifier for the European and World Championships. That, of course, added some intrigue. But fundamentally, every such tournament is very important for making the national team.

As for the level of the upcoming championship, to be honest, what I saw at the Grand Prix Final, for example in women’s singles, was almost a ‘B category’ compared to the championships we’ve seen with our girls. I am confident that right now, the top six at the Russian Nationals are absolutely competitive with the top six at the international Grand Prix Final,” Averbukh said.

The tournament will take place from December 18 to 21 in St. Petersburg.
