Two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko believes Ilia Malinin will land a quintuple jump in the near future and says Malinin has not yet reached his full potential. Here’s a translation of his comments.

Malinin won the competition in Nagoya, landing seven quadruple jumps and setting a new world record (238.24) in the free skate.

“Ilia Malinin is making history at 21 years old with a world record at the Grand Prix Final. Seven quadruple jumps. He said it – he did it!

A new world record – 238.24. I saw that the previous record was 228.97 – also his. He beat it by almost 10 points! It’s fantastic.

He is now on a different technical level from all his competitors! And this is not yet his maximum.

I know his parents well, who raised a very good young man. Ilia definitely knows how to make the impossible possible!

If someone had told me 15 years ago in Vancouver 2010 – when I said at a press conference that the future belonged to quads – that in 2025 someone would land seven quadruple jumps, I wouldn’t have believed it!

Back then, after my performance, the ISU increased the value of quadruple jumps. And that pushed figure skating forward at a tremendous speed.

The main question everyone is asking: what’s next? Will Ilia land a quintuple – will he? Absolutely – and it will be a 5S! And I am more than sure it will happen in the near future!

Go for it, champion! God bless you with health! Keep making history!” Plushenko posted on his Telegram channel.
