American figure skater Ilia Malinin described his attempt at a quad axel combination in the Grand Prix Final as risky and reflected on his performance after placing third in the short program. His comments were reported by Sports journalist Maya Bagriantseva. Here’s a translation.
Malinin is currently in third place after the short program at the Grand Prix final (94.05 points), behind Japanese skaters Yuma Kagiyama (108.77) and Shun Sato (98.06). In his performance, Malinin intended execute a quad axel–triple toe loop combination, but a step-out on the first jump prevented it.
“Today’s short program was quite interesting for me. Of course, I took a risk when I decided to go for the quad axel combination. It didn’t work out, so I just had to skate the rest of the program. Aside from the mistakes on the jumps, everything else went pretty well.
I would say I was a bit more nervous than usual at this competition – after all, I attempted the quad axel combination. But in practice, it was going well, so I wanted to try it. For me, it was a real passion to see if I could land that combination.
But I understand that it’s extremely difficult, and it takes a lot of time and concentration. So I think in the future I might try a slightly different approach, if I ever attempt it again,” Malinin told Sports correspondent Maya Bagryantseva.
