World champion Elizaveta Tuktamysheva shared her strong opposition to rhetoric and policies in Russia pressuring women to give birth and restricting abortion, emphasizing the importance of personal choice. Here’s a translation of her comments.
“Q: Do you feel and hear the rhetoric that, in Russia now, a woman must give birth?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: I do feel it. I hear it. I read the news, and it triggers me – let me use that trendy word. There’s no other way to describe my reaction to people telling me how to live, what to do, and at what age I should have children.
Q: They’re not just advising. That’s putting it mildly.
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: They insist.
Q: They dictate what you should be doing. It’s awful to listen to. How does it feel when it’s directed at you?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: I try to calm myself down. I read it and think, “Okay. Sensible women who know what they want to achieve, who know their worth, will build their own path.”
I just prefer not to react to it anymore. Because there’s nothing I can do to change the situation. I understand why this narrative is being pushed toward women right now. So I just live my own life. I realize it’s better if I don’t read it – then my nerves will be calmer.
Q: In two regions of Russia, abortions are essentially already banned. What is your view on abortion bans?
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva: It’s also terrible. I don’t understand why they think banning abortions is directly linked to improving birth rates. I recently read a book called “Sex in the Soviet Union,” or something like that. It talked about how, in the Soviet Union, they tried to improve birth rates by banning abortions nationwide. And as we know, it didn’t improve birth rates.
On the contrary, more women died. Because they started having abortions illegally, and as a result of infections, not only were babies not being born, but women were dying as well. It led nowhere. I don’t understand why this practice still exists,” Tuktamysheva said in an interview with Vita Kravchenko.
